The Basics of Prenatal Care With Your Obstetrician
What is Prenatal Care?
Prenatal care involves the medical attention and support a pregnant individual receives throughout their pregnancy. During this time, your obstetrician will:
- Determine your estimated due date
- Discuss nutrition, exercise, work considerations, and common pregnancy issues such as morning sickness, heartburn, and back pain
- Advise you on what to avoid, including alcohol, smoking, and certain medications or chemicals
- Keep track of your health to identify any potential problems
- Monitor your baby’s development to check for proper growth
- Talk with you about pregnancy, labor, and delivery, and help you plan for the birth
- Explain how to care for yourself and your newborn after delivery
- Do tests to check for any health issues affecting you or your baby
